Baker Act on-line training modules, have been reviewed and approved for continuing education credits for attorneys, nurses, licensed psychologists, licensed social workers, licensed mental health counselors, licensed marriage and family counselors and certified addiction professionals.


Attorneys – Approved through the Florida Bar for one contact hour for each module completed.


Certified Addictions Professionals (CAP) – The University of South Florida (USF) Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute is an approved provider of CAP credits by the Florida Certification Board, Provider Number 147 Level A,. This program has been reviewed and approved for up to one continuing education credit for each module completed.


Certified Peer Specialist: The University of South Florida (USF) Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute is approved by the Florida Certification Board to sponsor continuing education for Certified Peer Specialists. The Institute maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This program was reviewed and approved for up to one, 60-minute contact hours for each module completed.


Florida Board of Licensed Clinical Social Work, Licensed Marriage Therapists and Licensed Family Therapists and Licensed Mental Health Counselors – As an organization approved by the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling (CE Provider #50-1232), the Certification Board for Addictions Professionals (Provider #147 Level A), the University of South Florida, Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute is offering this activity for one 60-minute continuing education credit for each module completed for clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors, addictions professionals. The Institute maintains responsibility for this program and its content.


Guardians -  Approved through Florida Department of Elder Affairs  for one continuing education credit for each module completed.


Psychologists (APA) – The University of South Florida, Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. FMHI maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This program has been reviewed and approved for one 60-minute contact hour for each module completed.


Nursing – The University of South Florida (USF) Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute is a Florida Board of Nursing approved provider (#50-1232) of continuing nursing education.  This program meets the Board of Nursing requirements for one 50-minute contact hour for each module completed

About The Workshop          

Scope of Statewide Training Efforts


The scope of statewide Baker Act training efforts is broad, recognizing the complexity of the acute care system for persons with mental health issues. The statewide Baker Act training emphasizes training needs of mental health professionals, law enforcement, state and local government entities and community partners within the system itself.


Intended Training Audience


The online Baker Act Training Introduction provides a general curriculum for interested persons involved in Florida’s mental health system at all levels including, mental health professionals, medical professionals, advocates, consumers and their families. A wide array of personnel throughout will find this training useful and relevant to their professions.


General Training Topics


The Baker Act training begins with a history and overview of the Baker Act, focusing on the creation of a system of rights for persons with mental illnesses as well as their due process rights when held in mental health facilities.General training topics include voluntary admission and involuntary examination under the Act. The transfer of persons with mental illnesses to and among receiving facilities is also covered, along with transfers in legal status. Special populations and circumstances are highlighted. Rights of persons, including confidentiality, are explained
