About The Workshop

This advanced, one-day workshop is designed for mental health professionals who are already experienced in conducting competence evaluations for the criminal courts. In the morning, participants will be introduced to a new, state-of-the-art competence instrument, the MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool - Criminal Adjudication (MacCAT-CA).

Participants will learn...

  • Two-domains articulated in Bonnie's theory of adjudicative competence
  • Competence-related abilities assessed using the MacCAT-CA
  • Strengths and limitations of the MacCAT-CA relative to previously existing competence assessment instruments
  • Key research findings related to the psychometric properties and validityof the MacCAT-CA
  • Issues and criteria relevant to legal determinations of competence to waive Miranda rights
  • Measures (Grisso) for evaluating competence to waive Miranda rights and the indices that indicate capacity in understanding and appreciating those rights
