With the passage of the Jimmy Ryce Act, Florida has followed a national trend that provides procedures for extending the period of incarceration of dangerous sex offenders. Legal determinations of which sex offenders pose a risk for future sexually dangerous behavior will be informed by risk assessments conducted by mental health professionals. This workshop is designed to provide clinicians training on the relevant research and assessment methods necessary to prepare them to conduct such evaluations and to testify in court.

  • Legislative provisions for sex offender risk assessments
  • Administrative procedures for evaluation conducted under the auspices of the Department of Children & Families Recent literature on sex offender recidivism
  • Current methodologies for assessing risk for future sexual violence including: Violence Risk Assessment Guide (VRAG), Sex Offender Risk Assessment Guide (SORAG), Sexual Violence Risk (SVR-20), Hare's Psychopathy Checklist - Revised (PCL-R), and interview techniques for dealing with reluctant respondents and taking a sexual history
  • Effective communication strategies for report writing and testimony

  • Who should attend
