Project Area

The Department hosts several research projects examining prevention and treatment of substance use and co-occurring disorders (substance use and mental health). These include evaluations of drug courts, jail diversion programs, interventions for homeless persons, and programs for women who have experienced trauma and for those who are “at risk” for drug use during pregnancy. Studies have examined effective screening and assessment approaches for use with offenders, special needs of women with co-occurring disorders who are diverted from the justice system, and effective implementation approaches for evidence-based substance abuse treatment practices in community and justice settings. Faculty members have collaborated with the National GAINS Center and a number of federal agencies to develop monographs that promote current, innovative, and science-based practices to assist those with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.
