Behavioral Health and Law covers a variety of research issues. One class of studies focuses on the mental capacities required by law for a person to be able to participate in legal proceedings or other activities. Such studies include investigations of mental capacities related to competent participation in the adjudicatory process (competence to stand trial) and competence to consent (e.g., to research participation; to mental health treatment), among others. Additional studies investigate the nature and etiology of mental disorders that are prevalent among offenders (e.g., psychopathy, antisocial personality disorder). A third class of studies focuses on treatment and management issues, including evaluations of intervention programs (e.g., prisoner reentry into society) and assessments of risk (e.g., for institutional aggression; for recidivism).
