Biography

Kathleen A. Moore, Ph.D. is a Research Assistant Professor and the Training and Dissemination Coordinator in the Department of Mental Health, Law, and Policy. She received her B.A. in sociology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and both her M.A. and Ph.D. in social/health psychology from Kent State University. She did her post-doctoral fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in which she worked on a NIMH-funded study assessing the effects of exercise vs. medication on clinically depressed older adults. For the past eight years, she has been at FMHI with a primary focus in the area of substance abuse and mental health.

Currently, Dr. Moore is working on several community-based research projects with local substance abuse and mental health providers. She is Principal Investigator on two grants funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA): Family Dependency Treatment Court grant is a collaborative effort between the 13th Judicial Court, Hillsborough Kids Incorporated (HKI), Goodwill Industries, Inc, and FMHI. The goal of the program is to incorporate two evidence-based programs for substance-abusing parents who are involved in the child welfare system, and Pinellas County Adult Drug Court Collaborative grant is a partnership between the 6th Judicial Circuit Court, Operation PAR, Inc., WestCare GulfCoast-Florida, Inc., and FMHI. The purpose of the collaborative is to increase evidence-based practices and referral services to effectively respond to the increasing population of female offenders who are misusing and/or abusing prescription drugs. Additionally, she is an Evaluator on two other grants funded by SAMHSA: “Hillsborough Assertive Community Treatment” Homeless grant assesses the effectiveness of an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) approach for homeless individuals diagnosed with severe and persistent illness, and Hillsborough County Jail Diversion grant examines the effectiveness of a forensic intensive case management (FICM) approach for adults with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders who are being diverted from jail into treatment. Finally, she is co-principal investigator on a USF Collaborative grant: Pinellas Hope was established to meet the shelter and service needs of chronic and other street homeless adults by providing a safe, contained camp site with staff assistance to link and integrate social service and employment supports. The project will evaluate the follow-up status of former homeless residents admitted to Pinellas Hope at 6 months to examine and learn if and how self-sufficiency (e.g., not returning to homeless status) is being maintained. She is also on several advisory boards including the Tampa Alcohol Coalition, Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance, and Family Dependency Treatment Court as well as USF’s Women’s Status Committee.
