Dee Cain came to the Florida Mental Health Institute at the University of South Florida as a Visiting Instructor. She was hired as a MAPP Trainer (Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting) and as a Child Welfare Trainer in Child protective Investigations, Foster Care and Adoptions in March, 1989. She had previously served Florida children and families in the area of child protection for five years as a Protective investigator and as an Adoptions Recruitment Specialist. She also worked with children and families for 8 years in the area of maternal Infant Care as a Clinical Social worker, working with Teen Aged pregnancy project at UF, and in the UF Pediatrics Clinic as a Health Educator bringing the total number of years working directly with families and children to 13.5 years. Dee also worked in the area of Forensic Mental Health as a Supervisor and building manager at the North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center in Gainesville Florida in the Sexual offender unit for one year.
Dee currently serves as Master Trainer for the Child Welfare Training Academy at the Institute. As such she prepares the overviews of the Florida Child welfare pre-service curriculum and prepares trainers throughout the state for certification as Certified Trainers of Florida Pre-Service Training. Dee has also served the Institute as State-wide Training Manager, Regional Training Manager, and Certified Child Welfare Trainer. Child Welfare Pre-service and In-service Training subject areas include Introduction to Child Protection, Investigations, Protective Services Practice, Foster Care Practice, Cultural competency, Adoptions and Related Services, Family Team Conferencing facilitation Certification Training, MAPP Leader certification Training and Approved MAPP Trainer Certification in the Florida Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting, Human Diversity Training and many other specific topics in child welfare.
She developed the statewide implementation plan for Family team conferencing and is responsible for developing the state facilitation certification training program in Family Team Conferencing.
Dee is a national trainer in the areas of Adoptions and Foster Care and has delivered Keynotes and presented across the USA in state and National conferences, such as NACAC and National Foster Parent Association, Virginia State foster Parent conference and Georgia State Foster parent conferences. She redeveloped the Florida MAPP curriculum in 2000, and the SET program used in Florida to train supervisors in 1997. Dee has worked at the Institute for a total of 14 years, having left the institute to work for the Child welfare Institute in Atlanta between1992-95 as a Child Welfare Associate, which took her across the country as a trainer and consultant and into East Africa as a presenter. She maintained an appointment as a visiting Instructor while she worked in Atlanta and returned to the Institute in 1995.
Dee earned a Bachelors degree in Sociology from the University of Illinois and an MSW degree from Florida State University. She is an Approved Florida MAPP Leader Certification Trainer and is responsible for training all approved trainers in the State of Florida.
